Ye Old House

The house to which Ark Cottage is annexed has been tree-ring dated to the late fifteenth century, the most recent timber (in the roof) felled in the spring of 1467. As oak was used green, the building was likely to have been put up in the summer of that year or soon after. The house itself is all that remains of a larger hall house, being originally a four-roomed wing with parlour and solar (bedchamber) for the owner and his family to retire to from the communal hall. He may have been a wealthy sheep farmer or wool dealer, but that is pure speculation!

You are welcome to a short tour of the house.
